Moving to Switzerland from abroad (relocation goods)
Relocating to Switzerland is the main condition for being able to import one’s house-hold effects, collections, animals or car into the country free of tax. The only requirement is that the goods must have been used by you personally for at least six months prior to importation and must continue to be used by you thereafter (for example, for twelve months in the case of cars).
Since 1 June 2007 citizens from the first 15 EU states (+ Cyprus and Malta ) as well as from the EFTA states are no longer required to provide an assurance of a residence authorisation. Change of domicile has to be proven by other means (work contract, tenancy agreement, deregistration from the country of origin).
Completed application form 18.44 must be submitted to the entry-point customs office upon importation.
Clearing of removal goods must take place during customs office opening hours.
Further information may be found in the cover letter of application form 18.44. Alternatively, you may seek advice at the costums office of entry or the corresponding district directorate of customs.
If you are getting married and are moving to Switzerland to join your spouse, who is already resident in Switzerland , you may import your removal goods and the wedding gifts which you will receive abroad free of tax.
The completed application form 18.45 must be submitted to the entry-point customs office upon importation.
Inheritance
If a person resident in Switzerland inherits goods from a person whose last place of residence before passing away was in a foreign country, the goods may be imported into Switzerland free of tax. The completed application form 18.46 must be submitted to the entry-point customs office upon importation.
Certain items (with the exception of vehicles and horses) may be imported free of tax as advance inheritance.
Applications for tax-free importation of items of property acquired by inheritance in excess of CHF 100'000.- in value must be submitted to the relevant District Directorate of Swiss Customs prior to importation.
