1. electricity costs for water and heating are high, so please have one shower a day-(10 minutes) before 10p.m.
2. heaters and lights off when not in bedroom. Do not leave heater on overnight.
3. local Nelson phone calls are free, otherwise use phone card.
4. pictures etc. on hook in wall, or on wooden surface-door-not on wallpaper.
5. no candles in the house
6. keep food in the kitchen, any small snacks in your room keep sealed inside plastic container( I don’t want mice in house )
7. I like to you use my oil for cooking. Do not use fish sauce in cooking
8. vacuum clean carpet in room once a week.
9. sheets and towels washed once a week.
10. use the washing machine for your personal clothes, and hang outside on the clothesline. If it is raining, there is a clothes rack in the basement.
11. sanitary pads wrapped up and disposed up and rubbish outside.
12. you must tell me weeks before you leave this house, or pay two weeks rent.

Welcome to Palm Haven
We are so pleased to have you come and stay in our home. We hope your enjoy your time here, being part of our family. We are a Christian family, which may be different to what you are used to. You are welcome to ask us questions about this. We would also like to learn about your own family beliefs.
We have the following guidelines to help you understand how our home functions so that every one is happy and safe.

Rebecca Wilson lives in room 4. she helps us to run Palm Haven and is available to help you with English practice and any concerns you have.
Family night
To help us to know each other, and so we can have fun together, we have a family night on Tuesday evening for all people at Palm Haven. This will be from 6pm (dinner) until 7:30pm. It will include a mixture of notices, games and discussion.
Home-stay Guidelines
Please ask for help at any time. We are happy to care for you if you are sick and take you to the doctor if you need to go. Please tell us if you have any concerns or worries.
We want help you with your English. Meals times and in the evenings are good time to chat.
Please tell us if you are going to be home late so we don’t worry about you!
No smoking is allowed in the house, no alcohol, no drug taking is allowed by any person who is a home stay.
Rooms
You are responsible for keeping your room clean and tidy and keeping the bathrooms, kitchen and laundry tidy after using them.
There seem to be a lot of ants here, if they are in your room, tell Meredith, she has some very good ant poison.
Meals
We have dinner between 6pm and 6:30pm.
If you do not plan to be home for dinner please tell use before 5pm.
If you want to help cook dinner you are very welcome. You can cook a meal for use all yourself sometimes if you want to.
Breakfast – we provide cereals and bread. You can prepare rice or noodles if you wish. If there is a food you would like please tell use and we will do our best to provide it.
Lunch- you can use food that we have had for dinner or you can take sandwiches or
Noodles if you wish. If there is a food you would like please tell us and we will do our best to provide it.
Dishes
It is our custom for home-stays to help with clearing up after dinner in the evening. It is a good time to practice your speaking and listening to improve your English and for us all to get know each other.
Noise and cooking after 10 pm
New Zealand people like to go to bed at about 10pm, if you are awake after 10pm please think of others sleeping and keep quiet.
No cooking after 10pm this for safety reasons.
Visitors
You are welcome to bring your friends home. We ask that no person of the opposite se be allowed in the others bedrooms. No men in girls bed rooms or women in men’s bedrooms. If you want to talk together you can do this in the lounge or on the landing.
If you would like your friends to stay for dinner, please ask Meredith before 5pm
The children
Amarah knows the upstairs is for home-stays only, and that she is not to come into your rooms. This is for your privacy and their safety. Malakai is too young to understand this. If he does come up, please call one of us and we will come and get him! Malakai is at a very mischievous age! Please be careful not to leave hot drinks, pens, knives and other dangerous things where he can reach them. Please don’t leave the front door or back gate open, we dn’t not want him to escape.
Telephone
Please ask your friends not to call after10pm. You can make calls to your friends after that time. Please use a prepaid card for toll/ international calls e.g. World Phone Card.
We are hoping to get “broadband” soon, when we get this, you should be able to access the internet in your room. We will tell you when this happens
Please limit you phone calls as others may wish 6to use the telephone.
Water
Please keep your shower as shower and heating is expensive. We have a tank for hot water and if your shower is too long, others may miss out
Please do not leave plugs, clothing or anything else in the basins in your rooms, we n0o not want to have a flood.
Cleaning
Meredith and Rebecca do the house cleaning but we as you to keep your own room clean and tidy. They will also vacuum clean your room unless you prefer to do it
Meredith and Rebecca will change your bed sheets every two weeks. If you would prefer to do this yourself please tell them. Please change your own towels from the linen room and place the used towels in the basket by the washing machine.
You are expected to do your own laundry. Meredith will show you how to do this. If you would like her to do it for you sometimes, please ask.
Recycling and rubbish
At palm haven we like to recycle as much as possible. The recycling goes on Monday morning. Please bring your paper, plastic and glass to the laundry and place it in the recycling bin before this time. Food scraps are placed the ice-cream container under the sink in the kitchen, they will be composted. All other rubbish can be placed in the large black rubbish bin by the laundry door. The rubbish is collected on Monday morning also.
Lights
At night when you leave the room put the light out or when leaving any other room. Electricity is Expensive.
Heating
You have been provided with heater in your room. This must never be left on when you are not in the room. This is an older house and therefore is cooler in the winter. If you feel cold please add more clothing, especially wool, ask us if you are unsure and we can help you to buy some warm clothing. Please limit your use of the heater as electricity is expensive. Do not use it when you are asleep. We have provided you with an electric blanket on your bed. The best way to use this is to turn it on one hour before you go to bed and turn it off when you get into bed. Please remember to turn it off when you are asleep. If you are cold at night please ask and we will get you more blankets for your bed.
Security
Lock the doors when you come inside or when you go out and no one else is home; also make sure all the windows are closed.
Fire alarms; please always find out why the fire alarm is ringing!!!!!!!! If you might burnt alive! Fire drill- if there is a fire shut the doors behind you, ring 111 tell everyone there is a fire and get out of the house quickly.
Don’t go back to save anything!! Fire extinguisher, know where it is and Use it if the fire is small .the fire escape steps form the second floor are for emergency use only.

This is a home stay agreement between Jonathan and Meredith Thorpe and

Board is $180 per week.
The board will pay by automatic payment.
The boarder needs to give two weeks notice of intention to leave Palm Haven.
The board will cover
- accommodation
- electricity
- food and preparation of evening meals (except Friday & Saturday Night)
- Water
- Use of telephone line (boarder to pay for own toll calls)
- use of laundry facilities (including washing powder)
The boarder has exclusive use of their room. The board is responsible for keeping their room clean and tidy for keeping the bathrooms, kitchen. And laundry tidy after using them.
The boarder has read and understood the Palm Haven home-stay guidelines.
